Since the victory of the Islamic Revolution, the Islamic Republic of Iran has continually faced military offensives and economic, cultural, social, and media threats from adversaries, which have led to social and political crises, and ultimately to security crises. At times, such hostilities manifest in the form of public protests and gatherings.
The present article aims to examine the impact of the media behavior of elites in exacerbating security crises—particularly the 2022 unrest—within the framework of Robert Gurr’s (1990) Relative Deprivation Theory. The study population consists of 40 experts in media and sociology. To analyze the indicators obtained from interviews, open coding was conducted using MAXQDA 2020 software, and the interview data were analyzed through inductive content analysis.
The findings reveal that, in the domain of decremental deprivation (losses relative to the past), the most influential indicators of elites’ media behavior include making directional comparisons between contemporary Iran and pre-revolutionary governments, highlighting the system’s weaknesses, and remaining silent in the face of news. In the domain of aspirational deprivation (tools for attaining new expectations), the key indicator is promoting perceptions of governmental inefficiency. In the domain of progressive deprivation (expectations of continued improvement), the influential indicators include reinforcing perceptions of inefficiency, amplifying security-related issues, sharply raising public expectations, failing to promote political insight, and supporting rioters.
