The Ashura epic, as a historical and religious event imbued with profound semantic layers, has long inspired religious, cultural, and identity discourses within Islamic societies. In the contemporary era, this epic has been represented through modern media, particularly the social media platform Instagram, in the form of diverse images and videos, engaging a wide audience. This study aims to explore the representation of Ashura in digital media and elucidate the cultural and communicative functions of such representations by conducting a semiotic and content analysis of a sample of Instagram posts related to Ashura in 1403. The research employs a mixed-method approach, combining thematic analysis and semiotics, with data collected through interviews with experts and visual analysis of images and videos.
The findings reveal that Ashura’s visual elements, such as black and red flags, the cradle of Hazrat Ali Asghar (Peace be upon him), the riderless horse, and scenes of chest-beating and mourning, not only facilitate the transmission of concepts like sacrifice, resistance against oppression, and martyrdom but also effectively contribute to the reproduction of cultural and religious identity among the younger generation in the digital realm. These symbols, particularly when integrated with modern graphic technologies, create a new language for expressing Ashura’s values, resonating with contemporary audiences.
Moreover, these representations extend beyond reinforcing identity; they are also interpretable from the perspective of cultural passive defense. Amid the intensifying cognitive warfare and soft threats against religious and cultural values, the strategic use of Ashura’s representation on social media can serve as a potent tool for cultural defense and enhancing societal soft resilience. This study demonstrates that leveraging Ashura’s symbols in the virtual space not only raises public awareness and fosters a sense of cultural belonging but also possesses the potential to create cultural deterrence against psychological operations and soft warfare. Thus, the media representation of Ashura can be regarded not merely as a communicative tool but as a proactive strategy for safeguarding cultural security.
