Emerging technologies such as drones, cyber warfare, artificial intelligence, space-based systems, and biotechnology have significantly transformed the military capabilities of countries and have directly and indirectly influenced their military and security strategies. Drones, as a key tool in Iran’s military strategies, have played a unique role in intelligence, surveillance, and precision strikes. This study was designed to examine and analyze the impact of emerging technologies on the military and security strategies of the Islamic Republic of Iran from 2010 to 2024.
The importance of investigating these technologies’ effects on Iran’s military and security strategies is multi-faceted. First, the study provides a deeper understanding of the role of emerging technologies in Iran’s strategic and tactical military changes. Second, by examining the interaction between new technologies and regional developments, the research can offer practical solutions to enhance Iran’s defense and security capabilities. Third, the study can assist policymakers and military and security decision-makers in formulating and implementing strategies aligned with changing global conditions.
This research employs a descriptive-analytical methodology to examine and analyze the influence of emerging technologies on Iran’s military and security strategies. The statistical population includes senior managers and officials in various military and security sectors of Iran with sufficient experience and knowledge in utilizing new technologies. Quantitative data collected through questionnaires were analyzed using statistical software such as SPSS. The central research question was how the interaction between emerging military technologies and asymmetric warfare has shaped Iran’s military strategies.
The results indicate that the use of artificial intelligence for big data analysis and threat prediction has significantly reduced the response time of the armed forces. Moreover, the adoption of emerging technologies should serve to strengthen national security and enhance Iran’s deterrence against internal and external threats. Accordingly, the main hypothesis—that “intelligent technologies have contributed to improving Iran’s defense capabilities and enhancing military deterrence”—is supported by the findings. Another hypothesis—that “the interaction of emerging technologies with asymmetric warfare has enabled Iran to adopt new approaches to address threats”—is also confirmed by the data.
The study further shows that despite limitations, Iran has managed to consolidate its position as a regional power with advanced technological capabilities. Continued progress in this path requires strategic commitment and careful planning.
